Tuesday is the first full day of summer and that means it's also the annual Make Music New York event. Every year, thousands of musicians perform in public spaces around the city to kick off the fun-in-the-sun season. This is the 10th anniversary of Make Music New York and we’ve compiled a list of the classical performances happening throughout the day.
11:30 am–12:45 pm
Location: Shake Shack Upper East Side, 154 East 86th St.
Details: Violinist Fred G. performs his own solo arrangements of standard violin classics.
1–2 pm
Location: Clover’s Fine Art Gallery, 338 Atlantic Ave., Brooklyn.
Details: The Martina Arroyo Foundation’s Prelude to Performance presents young opera singers from all over the world.
1–5 pm
Location: Cornelia Street Café, 29 Cornelia St.
Details: Music for Four Pianos will feature pieces that use multiple pianos by Morton Feldman and other contemporaries.
3–4 pm
Location: International Preschools, 345 E. 86th St.
Details: Douglas DaSilva’s brass quintet, Chamberlain Brass Quintet, will perform a complete set of its most popular works.
3–4 pm
Location: Greene St. & Broome St.
Details: Mantra Youth Percussion will perform percussion music called Concerto for Buildings.
4–5 pm and 5–6 pm
Location: The Brotherhood Synagogue, 28 Gramercy Park South (at 4 pm). Calvary Church, 61 Gramercy Park North (at 5 pm).
Details: The Young New Yorkers’ Chorus will be giving two back-to-back performances of choral music.
4–9 pm
Location: West 70th St.
Details: A piano will be rolled out to The Pier at West 70th Street for “Glass on Water.” Philip Glass’ complete Piano Etudes will be played by the composer and NYC pre-college piano students.
4:40–6:30 pm
Location: Balsley Park, 9th Avenue and West 57th St.
Details: The Chamber Music Center of New York features young musicians early in their musical careers. They will perform music of the greats for chamber ensembles and orchestras.
4:45–5:30 pm
Location: First Street Green Art Park, 33 E 1st St.
Details: Cellist Dan Kassel mixes classical and electronics by looping sounds and effects while playing solo cello.
5–6 pm
Location: Naumburg Bandshell, Central Park.
Details: The International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE) will perform Alberto Ginastera's Serenata and Mario Davidovsky’s Divertimento a 8 “Ambiguous Symmetries."
5–6 pm
Location: Carroll Park, Smith St. and Carroll St., Brooklyn.
Details: Robert Duncan and his accordion quartet will play music of Bach, Berlioz and more.
5–6 pm
Location: Bleecker Park, Hudson St. and W 11th St.
Details: The Rutgers University bassoon ensemble, Bacoustics, performs a concert of masterpieces from Baroque to contemporary periods.
5:30–6:30 pm
Location: Bryant Park, W. 42nd St.
Details: Hundreds of wind band musicians will play the most well-known music of the band repertoire. The Sousapalooza honors the great "March King," John Philip Sousa.
6–7 pm
Location: Boston Properties, 601 Lexington Ave.
Details: French hornists of all levels are welcome to play music from classical to jazz in Mass Appeal Horns.
6:30–7:30 pm
Location: Albert's Garden at East 2nd St.
Details: Flutist Andrew Bolotowsky and harpist Tomoko Sugawara will perform a beautiful set of Renaissance music for flute and harp.
7–8 pm
Location: Straus Park, Broadway and W 106th St.
Details: Mass Appeal Recorders is led by Deborah Booth. A large group of recorders will play early classical music.
7:30–8:15 pm
Location: Carousel at Pier 62.
Details: A new composition by Ljova Zhurbin will be performed in a unique way. Just as the sun is setting, the brass players will make a circle around the audience members riding the carousel, and play this new work.
