Shubert's Unifinished Symphony
a life truncated by external events outside of ones control will never kill the soul. I feel This symphony appeals to everyones soul and those who survived 911 may remember those that did not when listening to it.

Rise by Brian Hugh O'Neill
This song reminds me that their is always hope in the midst of the darkest hours. The song begins with a requiem played on the accordion. One hears a siren go by. The lyrics capture the overwhelming emotional landscape that we all felt right after the attacks. The loss, the confusion and the despair followed by the hope the faith and the strength that we found as we clung to each other.
We will heal and we will come together and we will rise.

Grieg "Ase's Death" from "Peer Gynt"
It's reminiscent of waiting to see which of my fellow commuters would not return, the train passing parking lots empty except for the cars whose owners would not retun to drive them home. It represents the sadness of that time.

Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis by Ralph Vaughan Williams
I've always enjoyed this particular piece however in recent years, it has struck a chord with me personally. My first impression was its usage in Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World. In particular there are 2 scenes where the crew of the HMS Surprise has to painfully say goodbye to lost crew members, being the man overboard and role call of the dead scenes. The role call scene is fitting as Captain Aubrey recants remembering his lost crewmates. I recently had a house fire and lost 5 cats. As Aubrey mentioned never forgetting your mates, I will never forget my lost pets. And we should never forget our losses of 9/11.

This selection especially recorded by Pavaoratti is in a celebration to the lives and dignity of those who have passed. The fallen of 911 deserve this musical tribute.

Rise by Brian Hugh O'Neill"
While capturing the tragedy of this infamous day, it invokes hope and faith in the future of America, that we will together "rise" from the ashes of 9/11 and become whole again.

Bernstein's Jeremiah Symphony
I saw the whole thing happen outside my office window. Because I live in NJ, I saw the downtown fires and smoke from the Lincoln Tunnel helix or GWB that were visible for months.
It was hard sleeping, concentrating, or listening to music at that time - but I found Bernstein's "Jeremiah" oddly comforting. The story is far from happy...but the music is beautiful, even hopeful. Bernstein was the one who drew me to classical music; perhaps it was fitting that his music was there for me at that time.

Love's in Need of Love Today
I had been listening to this album on rotation the entire summer of 2011, leading up to that Tuesday morning on September 11, 2011. I returned to it for comfort. This song reminds me that all aspects of the human condition--anger, despair, sadness, confusion...and love...need love.

Fire & Rain by James Taylor
I guess this song is an obvious choice, but I dedicate it to the twin towers. I drive a tractor trailer and from my high vantage point I could see the towers as I drove across the Throgs Neck and the GW Bridges and along County Rd. in Secaucus, NJ. I still find myself looking for them because "I always thought that I'd see them again".

Spirit of Muddy Waters by Ramon Taranco

SPIRIT of MUDDY WATERS is composed by Ramon Taranco who also plays electric guitars and sings the lead vocals.
The Story behind the song:
The Spirit of Muddy Waters is Ramon Taranco's autobiographical composition recalling Ramon's struggling first year in New York city...living in a seedy NY hotel dealing with starving feral cats outside his window in the alley and an angry landlord pounding on his door for the rent. In the end overcoming New York's tough love and his own demons to come to a conclusion of clarity....a real New York tale.... and like New York - edgy but beautiful.
Lyrics:
Well there's thirteen black cats/ in the alley/ Well there's thirteen black cats/ looking up at me/ And when I open my window in the nightime/ let their eyes shine on me...and...../ The spirit of Muddy Waters/ keeps me searchin' and searchin'/ The spirit of Muddy Waters keeps me sane/ I hear footsteps in the hotel hallway/ I hear footsteps outside my little room/ There's a loud knocking at my doorway/ Sounds like bad luck and blues....and...../ The spirit of Muddy Waters/ keeps me searchin' and searchin'/ The spirit of Muddy Waters keeps me sane/ All I have is my yellow and black rider/ to keep me from the cold and rain/ and if you think that's enough baby, baby/ You've lost your mind maybe, maybe/ When I get up in the morning/ Won't you hand down my walking cane/ Cause I hear my train a comin'/ I'm gonna take this road a runnin' to/ The spirit of Muddy Waters/ keeps me searchin' and searchin'/ The spirit of Muddy Waters keeps me sane.

The Boxer by Simon and Garfunkel
I remember when Paul Simon sang this on Saturday Night Live that Saturday right after 9/11. He was flanked by police and firefighters, as well as Mayor Giuliani. Very moving. Very representative of New Yorkers:
In the clearing stands a boxer, and a fighter by his trade
And he carries the reminders of every glove that laid him down or cut him
'Til he cried out in his anger and his shame
I am leaving, I am leaving, but the fighter still remains.
