Mahler's Symphony No. 2 "Resurrection"
I first heard this piece about two months after the attacks and about a month after my high school returned (I went back home ten days after 9/11). When I heard the music, I recalled the start of the cleanup process and the gradual reopening of Lower Manhattan. With the end of the piece, I imaged the Twin Towers rebuilt and re-dedicated to the sound of church bells ringing across the city (in retrospect, I misunderstood Giuliani's talk of rebuilding). As the rebuilding started to take longer and longer, however, I reimagined the piece to tell the story of the first six months (to the first "Tribute of Light", with the final moments sounding like a city's call to Heaven upon the towers of light being lit) and to the first two years (to acknowledge the blackout of August 2003 in reflection of the trials New York had to face since the attacks but how it is still reborn and ultimately is triumphant). In short, this piece and 9/11 are intertwined in my mind.

Gabriel Faure's Requiem
The music is very soothing and comforting when heard in times of grievance and sadness.

the music you were playing when the planes hit the towers
I recall sitting at the desk in my office listening to Greg Whiteside that dreadful morning; news reports were still completely confused, but heard planes hit the towers. I was thinking about how many people in those offices in the towers were just like me and listening to QXR peacefully when their worlds ended.
I think they should be honored by your replaying the exact playlist of that morning, same times.

Wind beneath my wings, Bette Midler
Bette Midler sang this song at the 9/11 Memorial at Yankee Stadium on 9/23/11. The entire country was still reeling from the attacks at this time. I remember watching the concert, with tears streaming down my face. Whenever I hear this song, I remember the concert and the sadness of this event in our history.

Half the Angels - Graham Nash
"You got to heaven, blown 'cross the sky, crying for the angels to help you..."
He wrote this about 9/11 and I heard him sing it at a CS&N concert the next year. It was utterly perfect and heartbreaking.

This music is transporting and healing.

"All You Need Is Love" the Beatles
The title says it all. That's what we need, now and always. Lack of love caused 9/11. Love prevents problems, and love heals.

Some of my music from "Something Still Cool"
I lived in Battery Park City, was home at the time of the attacks, walking casually towards the River when the first tower began to collapse and ran inside another building just beating out the black cloud that enveloped the neighborhood for an hour. I was evacuated soon after and not allowed back home until 11 days later, depending on the generosity of a friend evacuated with me who had somewhere else for us to go, and many strangers and acquaintances during those 11 days. There's a lot more to the story which lasted way beyond the 11 days for those of us living near Ground Zero, and my professional jazz-singing opportunities tanked for quite some time during recovery. I was in the process ofmaking my first CD before 9/11 and didn't complete it until 2008. I'd love for you to play some of that album and can supply tracks if you choose.
