Moment Away by Dana Fuchs

:

It's an incredibly touching song that talks about how it feels to love your husband in the Twin Towers. In it she says "I sleep just to dream you back home to me."

In another line, she says she'd given her husband a kiss meant for a day, not a life time.

So touching.

Diana Krall " I get along without you"

:

It implies a sense of relief over the loss but inactuality this song signifies that with the passage of time, the loss is still palpable. The narrator of this story believes herself free of the influence, free of the pull of her lost significant other. But merely telling you the story and merely asserting her new-found “freedom” brings the pain flooding back. Other singers have picked up on that irony and made their voices bend around it, agonizingly. I listened to this song very often immediately follwoing 9/11/2001

"Dayvan Cowboy" by Boards of Canada

:

Some may hear the crashing drums that come in later in this instrumental as representing the buildings coming down. For me, the planes hitting and buildings falling happen during the sustained intro guitar--against the backdrop of the clear blue sky. The strings that come in just before the crashing drums make me think of those who first responded to the attacks rushing to action, and the crashing drums are both the difficulty and the persistence they had in what they did. The way we came together as a country immediately after 9/11 is the most significant thing for me, and I wanted a song that exemplified this quality.

A great song, and a good, strong voice that - even though English is not my native language – is linked to this tragedy. From that point of view a number that belongs in this tribute. (Probably I won’t hear it on the radio because I’m in the Netherlands but I’ll play my own copy on the September 9)

Vaughn Williams' "lark Ascending"

:

The lark, a beautiful bird of never-ending flight, captures all that is possible after such a devestation. May tis bird ascend forever, as the memorial of this day.

Barber's Adagio for Strings

:

It is somber for the occasion because of the deaths of our fellow citizens. It is also a reminder of our need for healing.

Moment in Time by the Dana Fuchs Band

:

Dana sings this song with such all inspiring passion that it reaches deep into your soul. You immediately feel internal emotions that you may have tried to hide and cover up. You will find yourself feeling as if you are living each and every word. By playing this song on the day of honoring 9/11, hopefully everyone that needs to open their hearts for a moment of feeling inner peace will be reached within.

"You said something" by PJ Jarvey

:

This was the first song I listened to that morning. It always takes me back to that moment of fear and uncertainty, but it also makes me feel hopeful and reminds me of the beauty of this city.

Rapsody in Blue

:

This music reminded me of NYC before I ever lived here, before I ever knew that it was intended to evoke a memory of NYC. It represents the power of this city, especially its power to generate creativity. I can hardly listen to it without crying. I think of the diversity of people I saw walking across Brooklyn Bridge on Sept 11. I was so proud.

"Safe and Sound" by Sheryl Crow

:

I heard this for the first time during a free concert that Sheryl Crow gave at Battery Park in May 2002. It is beautiful, ethereal, spritual. The lyrics speak so deeply to me and reflect how I felt on 9/11 as I lived through the horrific news of the loss of friends and neighbors and didn't know what to do to help.

Ten Years Gone - Led Zeppelin

:

I got to know this as a teenagers, so listening to it at 27 seemed somewhat profound, then at 37 again meaningful but with completely new meaning.

There is a somewhat mournful and longing quality to the music as well
