It implies a sense of relief over the loss but inactuality this song signifies that with the passage of time, the loss is still palpable. The narrator of this story believes herself free of the influence, free of the pull of her lost significant other. But merely telling you the story and merely asserting her new-found “freedom” brings the pain flooding back. Other singers have picked up on that irony and made their voices bend around it, agonizingly. I listened to this song very often immediately follwoing 9/11/2001
